The ride

The first half of this one is as flat as gravel gets around here: farm tracks and dry riverbed paths through the Ter valley, the kind of surface where you can hold a conversation and a decent speed at the same time.

Then it turns up. Els Àngels from Sant Martí Vell is the gravel way onto a climb most people only know from the tarmac side, and it is a different animal: looser, steeper in patches, and quiet enough that you will hear nothing but your own tyres. Same sanctuary at the top, earned differently.

Passport climb: Els Àngels

The gravel side of Els Àngels, from Sant Martí Vell. Same climb as the road routes, a different surface and a lot less company.
