The ride

Els Àngels is the first climb anyone who moves to Girona learns, and it never stops being good. You head south through Llambilles and Montnegre on quiet lanes, and the road tilts up long before you notice it has.

The climb itself is steady rather than brutal — the kind you can ride at a real tempo instead of just surviving — and the sanctuary at the top has been watching cyclists come up here for decades. A thousand metres of climbing in sixty-four kilometres, close enough to town that you can do it on a weekday morning and still be at work.
