The ride

West of Girona the land stops being farmland and starts being forest. Les Encies is the way in — a climb most visitors never find — and Sant Martí de Sacalm takes you deeper still, into the Guilleries, where the roads are narrow and the traffic is other cyclists or nobody at all.

The way home follows the Ter through Bonmatí, which is flat, fast and exactly what you want after thirteen hundred metres of climbing.

Passport climbs: Les Encies and Sant Martí de Sacalm

Two passport climbs, plus Les Serres above Bonmatí on the way home — not a passport climb, but the last effort of the day and the one you will remember.
