The ride

Mare de Déu del Mont is a sanctuary on top of a mountain at the edge of the Pyrenees, and getting there from Girona is a proper expedition: north through Banyoles and Besalú, then a climb that keeps going long after you expect it to stop.

Eighteen hundred metres of climbing over a hundred and twelve kilometres. From the top you can see the Pyrenees on one side and the sea on the other. There is no shortcut to that view.

Passport climb: Mare de Déu del Mont

The climb from Besalú. The hardest single climb in the passport, and the one that takes a whole day to come and collect.
